Project Beta

My digital artefact (DA), ‘The Daily Allie’, is a TikTok page where I post short vlog-style videos with the intention of helping young university students navigate the challenge of living away from home whilst encouraging a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

As expected, many iterations to my original idea have occurred throughout the development of my project. Whilst the social utility of my DA has remained the same, changes to the content I produce have been made as I monitor feedback from my audience.

Iterations to my Digital Artefact:

  1. Transition from Instagram to TikTok

Initially, my plan was to produce montage-style videos via Adobe Premiere Rush, export it to my phone and then posting it to Instagram as a reel.

Despite having over 1,000 views, my first video has only 27 likes and 1 comment.

By transitioning to TikTok, I replaced my time-consuming method of producing media which did not produce a great return, with a more efficient method to optimise rapid prototyping.

When viewing both platforms as data points, it is evident that TikTok can deliver a much tighter feedback loop between me and my audience in comparison to Instagram. Based on my observation of key metrics, such as increased views, comments and likes, I decided to iterate my project to post exclusively on TikTok.

2. Expansion to the range of content I produce

Whilst keeping my content relevant to my target audience, I also experimented with different vlog-styles, as well as other styles of videos, specifically those with trending audios/subject matter.

As a result of this experimentation, I observed that longer videos with a voice-over received more views than shorter montage-style vlogs synced to music. However, non-vlog-style videos received significantly more views and likes than the vlog-style videos

Considering this, I can assume this means the TikTok algorithm favours content which includes trending sounds, filters and subject matter, which is why I have decided to iterate my process to involve a broader range of video styles, along with my regular content.
