Unveiling Insights: Peer Commentary Critical Self-Evaluation

In class this week, we were given the opportunity to engage in peer commentary by providing feedback to our classmates on their project pitches.

At first, I was skeptical about the relevance of this task – after all, isn’t the marker the only one whose opinion really matters? However, I was wrong.

In this blog post, I will provide insights as to how this peer commentary task prompted a deeper self-evaluation process as I scrutinised my own approach to feedback and its impact on my learning journey.

Feedback from Peers

Firstly, let’s take a look at the feedback I received on my pitch…

The feedback offers valuable guidance from the perspective of my peers for how I could have refined my pitch. These insights enhance my awareness of my strengths and weaknesses, and how to address them in future tasks. For instance, there was a general consensus that I need to be more attentive to clarifying information as a means of  bridging potential knowledge gaps.

My Peer Feedback

As for my own peer commentary, I had the opportunity to provide feedback to two of my peers, Grace and Niese:

Grace – “The Niche of being a ‘Warehouse sale girlie’ Explained…”

Niese – ‘More about my Tarot Card Digital Artifact’

The process of providing peer feedback proved to be more of a challenge than I expected – I realised I struggle to provide constructive feedback without the fear I may hurt feelings. Ultimately, I overcame this challenge by using the feedback I received from Jade as a template. By doing so, I could view constructive feedback as a tool for gaining valuable insights, rather than criticism. Additionally, this task also revealed the general level of professionalism and creativity in work being produced across the cohort, and consequently increased my standard of quality for my own work.

Critical Self-Evaluation

Examining my peers’ work through a marker’s perspective taught me a lot about my own processes, and I gained several essential insights that have shaped my approach to future tasks.

It helped me identify my own strengths and weaknesses through comparative analysis. By analysing my peers’ projects, I could make comparisons with mine, revealing where I excel or lag and pinpointing areas for growth.

Additionally, it exposed me to new ideas and approaches. For example, the way Grace mapped her field site was original and effective – an approach I would not have considered myself. I was able to gain fresh ideas and inspiration from my peers’ approaches, enhancing my own project’s evolution.

In summary, this peer commentary process provided a range of valuable insights, in particular, it highlighted my own strengths and areas needing growth. It underscored the significance of understanding and applying the marking criteria as a key part of my own work, and ultimately enriched my approach to feedback and self-evaluation.
